In 2009, American student Amanda Knox was found guilty of murdering her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher.

The prosecution's theory was that is was a failed sex orgy that escalated into violence. Knox's former boyfriend and a third man, a mutual friend of Knox and the victim, were all convicted for the murder.

Knox was later acquitted of the murder charges.
In March 2013, Italy's highest court of appeal overturned the acquittal and has ordered a retrial of the murder case.
